This showroom was the first of a series of three, the main building development by McAlpine. The architect was a jazz musician and many of our early meetings took place in clubs, during intervals between his performances.
The contractor appointed for the installation was ‘Joinery Contracts’, located in the Midlands. Halfway through the installations, it became apparent that they would not be able to complete on time, and we, therefore, brought in a shopfitting contractor based in the South-West of London to assist, enabling us to complete to schedule.
The showroom was successfully opened by ‘Mike & Bernie Winters’, who commented that it was the finest ‘fish and chip’ shop they have ever visited. The comment did rub a little when at the celebration meal following the opening the main course was fish.
I am writing to you to say how very pleased I am, as is everybody else in Gallaher’s, with the showroom. Not only is it extremely well designed and a very pleasing place to be, but it was through your own personal efforts over the last few weeks in particular that we were able to get the Showroom opened on time.
I know that you were confronted with very many difficulties and that there are still a number of points to be resolved, but this does not detract from the fact that the first-day operation went very smoothly, which is very largely attributable to your understanding of the function of a showroom, and to the knowledge you had gained and applied from the Glasgow and Manchester operations.
I now look forward to an equal degree of success with your efforts on our behalf for the Sobranie Shop.
