Richard and Sonya having approached an architectural practice to propose an extension to their cottage and been disappointed by firstly the cost and secondly the rather unimaginative proposal, I was recommended to them by a previous client.
After many discussions we decided the main requirement was to only open and extend the ground floor, not to extend the first floor, but simply to modernise.
Our proposal extended the rear of the ground floor, allowing the slope of the roof to continue down across the proposed extension, maintaining a continuity to the rear exterior. This also enable us to create an interesting variation in the ground floor ceiling levels and introduce soft background lighting.
The ground floor was then opened creating a very pleasant open space, with an easy flow from lounge to dining room and kitchen. The proposal also opened the staircase and up- dated the first-floor bedrooms and bathrooms.
Following this we were asked to assist Richard and Sonya in redesigning the garden and assisting in the design and furnishing of the interior.
The whole exercise, other than delays of delivery of floor tiles from Italy, ran very smoothly with an extremely responsive client and a good rapport between client, builder and architect and the outcome extremely pleasing to our clients.
From start to finish of the project Ken has listened carefully to our requirements and has created a beautiful home which has far exceeded our expectations.
Ken’s design has opened the ground floor and created a feeling of much more space. The rest of the house has been modernised very tastefully. His guidance on choice of materials and furniture ‘some of which he designed’, has been invaluable and greatly appreciated.
Ken is a unique design talent, and he has been an absolute pleasure to know and work with throughout the works.
